Winning an Oscar is the pinnacle of a Hollywood career, but for some stars, holding onto the golden statue is harder than winning it. From high-profile heists to mysterious airport disappearances, here are eight shocking times Oscar statues went missing.
1. The Great Oscar Heist of 2000
Just days before the 72nd Academy Awards, a shipment of 55 Oscar statues vanished from a loading dock in Bell, California. The industry was in a panic until a junk scavenger named Willie Fulgear found 52 of them in a dumpster behind a grocery store. He was rewarded with $50,000 and tickets to the ceremony.
2. The Mysterious Case of Pavel Talankin (2026)
In a recent bizarre incident, Russian director Pavel Talankin’s Oscar went missing during a flight from New York. Security at JFK airport reportedly flagged the heavy gold statue as a "potential blunt weapon." After being separated from the director, the statue vanished in transit, sparking a frantic search by the airline before it was finally recovered.
3. Hattie McDaniel’s Historic Loss
Hattie McDaniel made history as the first Black performer to win an Oscar for Gone with the Wind. She bequeathed her award to Howard University, but during the civil rights protests of the late 1960s, the statue mysteriously disappeared. Decades later, the Academy finally replaced it in 2023.
4. The Imposter Thief (Alice Brady, 1937)
5. Whoopi Goldberg’s Trashy Surprise
In 2002, Whoopi Goldberg sent her Oscar back to the Academy for cleaning and replating. While in transit via UPS, the package was tampered with and the statue stolen. Like the heist of 2000, it was later found discarded in a trash can at an airport in Ontario.
6. Jared Leto’s Vanishing Act
Actor Jared Leto revealed that he hadn't seen his Oscar (won for Dallas Buyers Club) for over three years. He discovered it went missing during a house move but admitted he didn't want to tell anyone. "It's somewhere, but everyone is looking for it," he joked during an interview.
7. The After-Party Grab (Frances McDormand)
During the 2018 Governor’s Ball, a man literally snatched Frances McDormand’s Oscar off her table while she was celebrating. The thief was caught by a photographer after he started posting videos of himself with the statue on social media.
8. Olympia Dukakis: Stolen from Home
In a heartbreaking incident, actress Olympia Dukakis had her Oscar stolen from her home during a burglary. Unlike many others on this list, her original statue was never recovered, and she had to pay the Academy $78 to have a replacement made.
