Popular Pakistani actor Mariyam Nafees recently made headlines after opening up about the complexities of joint-family systems and the importance of personal space for women after marriage. During a television appearance, the actor, who married visual artist Amaan Ahmed in 2022, shared her insights on how generational expectations can sometimes become toxic.
Mariyam emphasized that providing a separate space for married couples is not just a modern preference but is also supported by religious values. "Every family needs a separate space," she stated, adding that even though her son Isa is not yet two, she is already preparing herself to respect his independence when he grows up.

She also addressed the common misconception regarding a wife's duties, stating clearly that it is not a daughter-in-law's primary responsibility to take care of the husband's parents—a discussion she believes should happen before marriage. Mariyam advocated for a woman's right to manage her own home and kitchen, suggesting that such freedom can actually bring positive changes to a household.

مریم نفیس کا کہنا تھا کہ شادی کے بعد بچوں کو الگ جگہ دینا نہ صرف ایک ضرورت ہے بلکہ مذہب میں بھی اس کا ذکر ملتا ہے۔ انہوں نے کہا، "ہر خاندان کو اپنی الگ جگہ کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔" انہوں نے مثال دی کہ ان کا بیٹا عیسیٰ ابھی دو سال کا بھی نہیں ہوا لیکن انہوں نے ابھی سے خود کو اس بات کا عادی بنانا شروع کر دیا ہے کہ بڑے ہو کر اس کی اپنی ایک الگ زندگی ہوگی۔

اداکارہ نے اس بات پر بھی زور دیا کہ یہ بہو کی ذمہ داری نہیں ہے کہ وہ سسرال والوں کی دیکھ بھال کرے، بلکہ یہ باتیں شادی سے پہلے ہی واضح کر لینی چاہئیں۔ ان کے مطابق ہر عورت کا یہ حق ہے کہ وہ اپنے گھر اور کچن کو اپنی مرضی سے سنبھالے، کیونکہ یہی آزادی گھروں میں مثبت تبدیلی لا سکتی ہے۔
