A major crisis is brewing in the French cultural world just ahead of the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. More than 600 prominent cinema figures, including acclaimed actor-director Juliette Binoche, photographer Raymond Depardon, and filmmaker Sepideh Farsi, have signed a powerful open letter published in the newspaper Libération. They are warning against what they describe as a potential "fascist takeover of the collective imagination" due to the growing influence of the far right over French cinema production and financing.
The core of the protest targets billionaire conservative industrialist Vincent Bolloré. Through his massive media empire—which includes the entertainment conglomerate Canal+ and its influential production division, StudioCanal—Bolloré holds a dominant position in European film and television. Creatives are deeply alarmed by Canal+ taking a stake in UGC, the third-largest French cinema network, which could give him complete control over the entire production chain from financing to theatrical release. Film insiders fear that his conservative and reactionary ideological views, already visible on his TV channel CNews, will soon dictate film content.
This cinematic revolt follows a historic protest in the publishing sector, where over 100 writers walked out of the Grasset publishing house over Bolloré’s control. Additionally, political tension is rising as Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party continues to poll exceptionally high ahead of the next presidential election. The party has already proposed sweeping cuts to arts funding and has openly discussed privatizing the state broadcaster, France Télévisions. While Bolloré has previously defended his acquisitions as purely financial ventures to boost French soft power, the creative community warns that independent cinema is facing an unprecedented systemic threat.
